Young Musician Competition

Alcester Singers Young Musician Competition was started by Malcolm Brinson over 30 years ago during his time as our musical director.

It is open to all young musicians living or attending a school within a 10-mile radius of Alcester and who are between the age of 11 and 18.  Competitors must have achieved Grade 5 or above and previous winners cannot enter.

The current prize is £200 and the winner will also receive the Malcolm Brinson Trophy which they can keep for one year.  The winner will also be offered the opportunity to perform at one of our concerts during the year.

Many of our previous winners have gone on to pursue prestigious musical careers. Our 2013 winner, Florence Cain, won BBC Radio 2 young chorister of the year 2016

The competition is sponsored by The Howarth Memorial Trust.

2023 Competition Report

There were eight entries for the 2023 competition and it was a wonderful evening of musical entertainment with much talent on display. The winner was Joshua T, a talented young violinist from Stratford. He greatly impressed the judges with his expressive performance of Csardas by Monti, and It Ain’t Necessarily So from ‘Porgy & Bess’ by Gershwin. The judges also awarded a second place prize to George F, for his performance of Automne by Chaminade.

Thanks goes to the adjudicators Jenny Powis; Carman Johnson and Emily Tyrrell for providing their time and knowledge to the competition.
